Central Queensland renewable energy zones
Central Queensland is well positioned for the energy transformation, with growing interest from the hydrogen sector.
Renewable energy will support regional industries like agriculture, manufacturing and minerals processing to grow and decarbonise.
To coordinate the planning and development of clean energy infrastructure in the region, we worked with Powerlink to identify 4 potential renewable energy zones (REZs).
REZs will connect multiple clean energy generators, like wind and solar projects, in a coordinated way. This will lower costs and deliver better outcomes for regional communities and industries. They will also help to attract investment to the right areas in Central Queensland.
REZs will be built and connected over time, providing ongoing job opportunities across multiple projects.

Central REZs
There are 4 potential REZs in Central Queensland:
- Isaac
- Capricorn
- Calliope
- Callide
When completed, these REZs are expected to generate up to 8,200MW of renewable energy.
Understanding community needs
A Strategic REZ Readiness Assessment for Central Queensland will begin in 2024 to help us understand potential impacts and opportunities at a regional level.
Issues such as workforce, housing and infrastructure will be considered, as well as opportunities to decarbonise the region’s industries.
If needed, readiness assessments may also take place at local level for each REZ.
These Detailed REZ Readiness Assessments will focus on local community needs, benefits and opportunities.
