Hydrogen division

The department’s Hydrogen division is responsible for securing a hydrogen future for all Queenslanders. To achieve this, we’re committed to working collaboratively with the private sector and other government agencies to foster hydrogen project investment and skills development and accelerate the production, domestic use and export of hydrogen in Queensland.

Queensland’s combination of significant renewable energy resources, world-class infrastructure such as ports, and long-standing trading partnerships, position Queensland to be a leader in the production, domestic use and export of renewable hydrogen.

A hydrogen industry in Queensland will create highly skilled jobs, open up a new export market for the state, and play a critical role in helping us reach our net zero emissions target by 2050, particularly in sectors where it is difficult to cut emissions. Our hydrogen industry will see us well placed to use our plentiful resources to help our trading partners achieve their own decarbonisation objectives.

Since 2019, the Queensland Government has committed more than $110 million, as part of the Queensland Hydrogen Industry Strategy 2019-2024, to help stimulate the hydrogen industry and future hydrogen jobs in Queensland. The Queensland Government has committed to refreshing the strategy for 2024-2028. The new strategy will play a key role in shaping the state’s forward planning as Queensland rapidly approaches the 50% by 2030 Renewable Energy Target.

Our vision is a world-leading hydrogen industry that enriches communities and fuels a sustainable future. To achieve this, we have committed to:

• Planning for a Hydrogen Future: updating the Queensland Hydrogen Strategy to support the industry’s growth including investigating potential hydrogen gas targets in consultation with industry.
• Supercharging our Hydrogen Hubs: coordinating and planning for hydrogen hubs in key locations across the state
• Increasing community awareness and engagement: ensuring Queenslanders are informed about the opportunities of our renewable hydrogen future, and understand the role of hydrogen, it’s uses and benefits.
• Creating Domestic Demand: investing in a hydrogen-ready gas peaking power station at Kogan Creek, and supporting the expansion of hydrogen for domestic use including in the transport sector by developing the Queensland Hydrogen Superhighway
• Preparing hydrogen legislation: providing a clear pathway for development of the renewable hydrogen industry in Queensland through an effective and efficient regulatory framework.
